विद्यार्थियों की उच्छृंखलता

हमारे यहां नैतिकता की भावना कम होकर अनैतिकता एवं उच्छृंलता बढ़ रही है, इसकी प्रतीति अब बड़े कहे जाने वाले हमारे लोगों को भी होने लगी है। अभी हाल में राजधानी में एक सम्मेलन हुआ था, जिसमें इसी संबंध में अच्छी चर्चा हुई थी और राष्ट्रपति राजेन्द्र प्रसाद ने भी खेदपूर्वक पुष्टि की थी कि नैतिक मान हमारे यहां घट रहा है। सबसे अधिक खेद तब होता है, जब जिन नौजवानों पर भविष्य का दारोमदार है, उन्हें अनीति और उच्छृंखलता की ओर झुकते तथा बढ़ते पाया जाता है। विद्याध्ययन का जो काल शिष्य-भावना, नीति एवं अनुशासन के पूर्ण परिपालन और शिक्षार्जन का होता है, उसमें जब इससे विपरीत बातें दृष्टिगोचर हों, तो देश के भविष्य के बारे में चिंतित हुए बिना नहीं रहा जा सकता। पर, दुर्भाग्यवश, ऐसी घटनाएं हो रही हैं, जिनमें इन बातों का प्रदर्शन होता है। ग्वालियर-गोलीकांड का जिन अधिकारियों पर दायित्व पाया जाये, उन्हें बुरा कहा ही जायेगा और इसमें शक नहीं कि वह एक बहुत दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण दुर्घटना हुई- परन्तु विद्यार्थियों का रुख भी निर्दोष नहीं कहा जा सकता। वे विनम्र और अनुशासित रहे हों, ऐसा कहने से पहले बहुत कुछ सोचना पड़ेगा। और उस घटना की खबरों को अभी हम भूल नहीं पाये थे कि आगरा से ऐसी खबर मिली है जो, यदि गलत नहीं है तो, अत्यन्त लज्जास्पद एवं दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण है।

शरद पूर्णिमा की पूर्ण चन्द्रज्योति में आगरा का ताजमहल प्रतिवर्ष अनेक नर-नारियों को दर्शनार्थ आमंत्रित करता है। कहते हैं कि इस सुखद दृश्य का आनन्द लेती हुई कुछ युवतियों को रात्रि के लगभग दो बजे ‘विद्यार्थियों के एक दल ने घेर लिया और वे उनसे छेड़-छाड़ करने लगे। प्रांतीय रक्षा दल के स्वयंसेवकों ने जब उन विद्यार्थियों के इस कुकृत्य में बाधा डाली और उन्हें वहां से निकाल दिया, तो कुछ समय बाद तैयारी के साथ विद्यार्थियों का दल आया और कर्तव्यरत स्वयंसेवकों पर छुरी, गुप्ती आदि से आक्रमण कर दिया। इससे स्वयंसेवक घायल हुए और पुलिस को आकर स्थिति सम्हालनी पड़ी। लेकिन मामला यहीं समाप्त नहीं हुआ, बल्कि फिर विद्यार्थियों की उससे भी बड़ी भीड़ ने उस थाने पर हमला किया, जिससे पुलिस वाले आकर उपद्रवी विद्यार्थियों को अपने साथ ले गये थे। उपद्रवी विद्यार्थी थाने के रक्षकों को मार-पीटकर साथियों को निकाल ले गये।

The officials found responsible for the Gwalior firing incident will undoubtedly be criticized, and there is no doubt that it was a very unfortunate incident—but the students’ actions cannot be blamed. One must think carefully before suggesting that they were polite and disciplined. And while we hadn’t yet forgotten the news of that incident, a report arrived from Agra that, if not false, is extremely shameful and unfortunate.

Every year, the Taj Mahal in Agra attracts numerous men and women to visit during the full moonlight of Sharad Purnima. It is said that some young women, enjoying this beautiful sight, were surrounded by a group of students at around 2 a.m. and began harassing them. When Provincial Security Force volunteers interrupted the students’ misdeeds and drove them away, a short time later, a group of students arrived, prepared, and attacked the volunteers on duty with knives, daggers, and other weapons. The volunteers were injured, and the police had to intervene to control the situation. But the matter did not end there; an even larger mob of students then attacked the police station from which the police had taken the unruly students. The unruly students beat up the police station guards and took away their friends.
